Monte Brasil

The Reserva Florestal de Recreio do Monte Brasil is a protected forest area on a volcanic peninsula connected to Terceira Island. It contains several walking paths through thick vegetation, viewing areas, and information signs along the trails.

The forest reserve was formally protected in 1989 to preserve this natural area. The decision was part of a broader effort to safeguard the island's remaining forest landscapes.

The reserve is a place where locals walk and spend time outdoors, away from the city center but still within reach. You see joggers, families, and nature lovers on the trails, especially when the weather is pleasant.

The trails are marked and easy to follow, though some sections are steeper than others. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time to visit the viewing points along the way.

At the top of the peninsula sits a 16th-century fortress that still stands and overlooks the sea. The combination of forest trails and this historical structure makes a visit here memorable in an unexpected way.
