Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, Baroque sanctuary in Lamego, Portugal
Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is a Baroque pilgrimage church on a hilltop above Lamego in northern Portugal. Two towers frame the facade, which rises above a monumental granite staircase of 686 steps decorated with Corinthian pilasters.
A small chapel dedicated to Saint Stephen stood on the hilltop since 1361. Construction of the current sanctuary began in 1750 and was completed in 1905.
The name means Our Lady of Remedies and refers to the Virgin Mary's intercession for illness and hardship. Pilgrims climb the steps in prayer, sometimes covering parts of the route on their knees, especially during the September pilgrimage season.
The climb can be divided into stages, with resting areas along the staircase. The Pátio dos Reis roughly halfway up offers shade and benches, surrounded by statues of biblical kings.
An old chestnut tree grows on the sanctuary grounds and was recognized as a Tree of Public Interest in 1940. It stands beside the religious complex as a natural monument.
