25 Fontes Falls

The 25 Fontes Falls features multiple water streams flowing down a rock face and gathering in a natural pool below. The location sits within thick forest that surrounds all sides of the water.

The area was shaped by the levada system, a water channel network built centuries ago in Madeira. The channels moved water from wetter northern regions to drier southern areas of the island.

The name comes from the twenty-five water sources emerging from the rock face, which shape the landscape. Visitors can experience the power of this natural variety firsthand as water flows down across multiple levels.

Access is by way of a forested hiking trail that passes through several tunnels and follows old water channels. The ground stays wet and slippery, so good footwear and careful steps are needed.

What stands out is that the water flows from a large number of separate sources rather than from a single point. This difference makes the falls visually distinct and sets them apart from other natural sites in the region.
