Boquilobo Bog Natural Reserve
Boquilobo Bog Natural Reserve, Nature reserve and Ramsar site in Santarém and Golegã, Portugal.
The reserve spans 817 hectares of wetlands, featuring diverse marsh ecosystems supporting numerous plant and animal species within the Tagus River basin.
Established on June 24, 1980, the Boquilobo Bog Natural Reserve received UNESCO biosphere reserve status in 1981 and Ramsar wetland designation in 1996.
The reserve serves as an educational center where visitors learn about wetland conservation, water management, and the protection of Portuguese natural heritage.
The Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas manages the reserve, which remains open 24 hours daily for nature observation and research.
The site contains one of Portugal's few nesting locations for Eurasian spoonbills and hosts the largest concentration of white herons in the Iberian Peninsula.
