Castle of Noudar

Castle of Noudar is a medieval fortress in Barrancos located between the Múrtega and Ardila rivers. It features thick defensive walls and strategically placed watchtowers that overlook the surrounding landscape.

King Dinis of Portugal ordered construction of this border fortress in 1295 to defend against Castilian invasions. It also functioned as a refuge for condemned individuals.

The fortress displays medieval Portuguese military design through its preserved gates, towers, and walls showing construction methods from the 14th century. Visitors can observe how these stone structures were built and arranged to serve their defensive purpose.

Access is available through marked paths from Barrancos town center, with parking near the main entrance. Information panels are positioned throughout the site to help visitors navigate and understand the fortification.

The fortress maintains an original water supply system connected to a spring called Fonte da Figueira. This engineering solution reveals how medieval fortifications secured their vital resources.
