Castle of Algoso

The Castle of Algoso is a medieval fortification built on a rocky outcrop, featuring a seven-sided tower keep and fragments of defensive walls that overlook the surrounding terrain. The remaining structures allow visitors to trace the layout of what was once a significant border stronghold.

The fortress was built in the 12th century as a border defense against the Kingdom of León during the reign of King Afonso Henriques. By the 13th century, the Knights Hospitaller gained control and reshaped its military and spiritual function.

The place reflects its role as a religious military headquarters, with the Knights Hospitaller leaving their mark through architectural choices that blend defensive and spiritual purposes. Walking through the site, you can still sense how these two functions coexisted.

The site can be reached on foot with parking available near the entrance for visitors. Since the ruins sit on uneven terrain with rocky surfaces, sturdy footwear and careful movement are advisable.

Archaeological work at the site has uncovered evidence of human settlement from the Stone Age, long before the medieval castle was built. These prehistoric findings reveal that the location held appeal for thousands of years.
