Castle of Lanhoso

Castelo de Lanhoso is a medieval fortress near Rendufinho perched on high ground and defined by rectangular defensive walls with a central tower. The structure stands over the remains of an earlier fortification, commanding views across the surrounding terrain.

A bishop ordered reconstruction of the castle walls in the 11th century, reusing stone from an older pre-Roman fortress that protected the Braga diocese. This early phase established the site as a key defensive position in the region.

The name comes from Latin origins related to wool production that once thrived in this region. Walking around the site today, you notice how the narrow paths reflect the close-knit settlement that grew at the fortress.

The climb to the summit requires good fitness since the path is steep and rocky throughout. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring water, especially during warmer months.

Archaeological work at the site revealed settlements from the Chalcolithic period, showing that people lived here across many centuries before the medieval walls were built. These ancient findings prove the location served as a refuge point far earlier than the fortress construction.
