Castelo de Longroiva

Castelo de Longroiva is a medieval fortification with stone walls and a central tower that enclose an area containing a cemetery. The structure preserves its original layout with thick defensive walls and defined access points.

The fortification was built between the 12th and 13th centuries as a defensive structure and later underwent renovation under Gualdim Paes. This reworking strengthened its defensive capabilities and merged earlier techniques with updated approaches.

The fortress displays features of medieval Portuguese military construction through its robust stonework and defensive design. Visitors can observe these characteristics in the thick walls and the austere organization of the structure.

The site is open to visitors throughout the year with parking available near the entrance. Comfortable footwear is recommended since pathways traverse stone surfaces and uneven terrain.

The castle's interior courtyard has served as an active cemetery since the 19th century, showing an unusual connection between military past and modern community use. This dual function makes it a rare example of working medieval architecture that has never abandoned its fortified core.
