Castle of Marialva

The Castle of Marialva is a medieval fortress on a mountain massif with thick stone walls, towers, and a central keep overlooking the Portuguese landscape. The site features a system of fortifications that connect different elevation levels across the hilltop.

The site began as a Lusitanian hill fort and later became a Roman settlement called Avarorum. During Portugal's Reconquista period, it transformed into a strategic defensive stronghold for the emerging kingdom.

The Nossa Senhora dos Passos Chapel and São Tiago church on the castle grounds display different architectural styles from various periods of Portuguese building tradition. Visitors can observe how construction methods changed over time, especially in the Manueline details visible on the church doorways.

The site is accessible for visits throughout the year, with trails leading to different sections of the fortification complex. Walking across the hillside requires proper footwear and care on uneven ground.

Archaeological excavations nearby revealed the ancient Roman city of Civitas Aravorum, connecting multiple layers of settlement history in the region. These discoveries show the location was an important center long before the medieval fortress.
