Castle of Penha Garcia, Medieval castle in Penha Garcia, Portugal.

The castle stands on a quartzite hill overlooking the Ponsul River valley, with remaining stone walls and fortified structures from its original construction.

Built during King Sancho I's reign, the fortress passed to the Order of Santiago in 1220 and later to the Knights Templar in 1300 under King Dinis.

Local tales recount the story of D. Garcia, who kidnapped the governor's daughter and received punishment by having his arm severed at the castle.

Visitors can reach the castle by car from Idanha-a-Nova municipality, with parking available near the base of the hill for easy access.

The castle grounds contain 490-million-year-old quartzite rocks with preserved trace fossils, known locally as painted snakes, documenting prehistoric marine life.
