Lisbon Naval Base

The Lisbon Naval Base is a military installation on the southern bank of the Tagus estuary that brings together several service branches and operations. The complex includes a naval academy, a maritime technology school, shipyard facilities for maintenance and repair, and marine infantry barracks.

Construction of the naval arsenal at Alfeite began in 1928 and was completed in 1937, bringing together scattered maritime facilities under one administration. This consolidation became the foundation for Portugal's naval operations and military strategy in the following decades.

The installation maintains strong connections with local maritime traditions through educational programs and exhibitions about Portuguese naval operations.

Access to the base is restricted due to security measures, though public events and guided tours are occasionally organized. Visitors should check beforehand which areas are open and what permissions may be needed for a visit.

The installation is located on what was once a royal estate, and it serves as the home port for most of Portugal's active naval vessels. This blend of historic grounds with active modern naval operations is rarely seen concentrated in a single place.
