Bugio Lighthouse, Marine lighthouse in Oeiras, Portugal.
Bugio Lighthouse is a lighthouse built on a small island at the mouth of the Tagus River, near Oeiras, Portugal. It rises from the remains of a fort, standing alone in the water and clearly visible from the surrounding coastline.
In the late 17th century, a fortress was built on the island to protect the sea approach to Lisbon, forming the base of what exists today. The lighthouse was added to the complex over time and has guided ships ever since.
For sailors entering the Tagus, this beacon has long served as the first sign that Lisbon is near. Today, boaters still use its green flashing light as a reference point when crossing the estuary.
Bugio sits on an island and can only be seen from the water, making a boat tour from Cascais or the nearby coast the most practical option. Clear days with calm seas give the best view of the structure.
The island is so small that the fort walls drop directly into the sea, and at high tide the water nearly reaches the base of the tower. This gives the place the appearance of a structure growing straight out of the river.
