Adro do Bom Jesus, Religious site in Tenões, Braga, Portugal.
Adro do Bom Jesus is a pilgrimage sanctuary near Braga featuring a grand staircase that rises through multiple levels with decorative fountains and religious statuary at different points. A neoclassical church crowns the hilltop above all the structures below.
A chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross was built on this hilltop in the 14. century, becoming the foundation for spiritual development over the following centuries. The sanctuary expanded over time with additions of terraces, fountains, and eventually the grand staircase and church.
Pilgrims and visitors move through the sanctuary spaces to reflect at various stations, each marked by religious sculptures and symbolic fountains along the ascent. The layout guides people through a spiritual journey that unfolds step by step.
You can climb the stairs on foot or take the water-powered funicular railway to reach the church at the top. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended if you choose the stairs, as the climb involves many steps over sloped terrain.
Different sections of the staircase represent the Five Senses through specially designed fountains that engage visitors with sensory experiences. Each fountain uses water in a different way to symbolize aspects of perception and human experience.
