Parque do Bom Jesus

Parque do Bom Jesus is a wooded park with multiple artificial lakes and garden areas that surround a religious sanctuary. The grounds offer walking paths throughout, several water features, and different planted areas at various elevations.

The grounds developed after uncultivated lands next to Bom Jesus Church were granted in 1806 for sanctuary expansion. Over the following decades, the area was shaped with pathways, gardens, and water features to create a usable landscape.

The grounds carry meaning connected to pilgrimage traditions that continue to draw visitors for spiritual reasons. The careful layout of spaces and presence of water elements shape how people move through and use the park during their visits.

The park is walkable on foot, though comfortable shoes are important since paths move across different elevation changes. In warmer months, bring water and sun protection if spending extended time in open areas.

The grounds feature a historic water-powered funicular railway from 1882 that carries visitors up the steep hillside. The system runs on water pressure and is a rare surviving example of this transport technology from the 1800s.
