Serra do Açor Protected Landscape

Serra do Açor Protected Landscape is a nature reserve in the Cerdeira e Moura da Serra region with mountainous terrain that spans different elevation zones. The area contains different types of forests and plant communities across this upland landscape.

The protected area was established in 1982 to preserve the natural vegetation and ecological values of this mountain region. Creating this conservation zone reflected growing understanding of the importance of protected areas in Portugal.

The region displays traditional terraced farming systems developed by local communities over generations. This way of working shapes how the landscape looks today and shows how people here manage water.

The location is open for hiking throughout the year, with changing conditions depending on the season and elevation. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and be prepared for different weather conditions across the various elevation levels.

A special forest called Mata da Margaraça shelters rare plant species that are found nowhere else in this broader region. Visitors walking through this older forest patch may encounter plants that occur in only a few other locations.
