The church exhibits three distinct portals on its facade, with the central one displaying Dominican Order coats of arms and royal emblems.
King Afonso III ordered the construction of this convent in 1267 after the final reconquest of Elvas from Moorish control.
The church interior contains tiles depicting scenes from Saint Dominic's life and a retable created by painter Simão Rodrigues in 1590.

The building served as military barracks following the 1834 abolition of religious orders before returning to its religious function.
