Edifício Caleidoscópio, Student center and shopping mall in Campo Grande, Lisbon, Portugal
Edifício Caleidoscópio is a student center and shopping mall located at the northern edge of Campo Grande Garden near the University of Lisbon. The building covers about 2,700 square meters (29,000 square feet) and displays a striking ceramic relief panel on its facade.
The building was designed by architect Nuno San Payo in 1971 and originally served as a tourist information center. It was transformed into a cinema and shopping mall in 1974 and has since become a hub for students and park visitors.
The building houses the Academic Association of the University of Lisbon and provides exhibition spaces where students and community groups organize events. It serves as a gathering place for university members and gives local artists and student groups a venue to display their work.
The facility offers students workspace with about 175 study seats, free wireless internet, and printing services available with a valid student ID. Visitors can access these resources throughout the day as the space is open continuously.
The 2016 renovation earned recognition through an honorable mention from the Valmor Prize, a notable achievement in local architecture. The project demonstrated creative problem-solving in updating a building that had served the community for decades.
