Estádio José Alvalade, Football stadium in Lumiar, Portugal
Estádio José Alvalade is a football ground in the northern Lumiar district of Lisbon, home to Sporting Clube de Portugal. The structure seats around 50,000 spectators and consists of four covered stands linked by corner sections to form a continuous oval.
The new ground opened in early August 2003, replacing the older stadium that had stood on the same site since 1956. The opening coincided with Portugal's preparations to host the 2004 European Championship, which saw several matches played here.
Named after the founding president of the club, the venue carries a name rooted deep in Lisbon's sporting story. On match days the grounds turn into a sea of green and white as thousands of fans wave scarves and chant traditional songs.
The ground sits right beside Campo Grande metro station, where the green and yellow lines meet. Visitors arriving by car will find several parking areas around the complex, though these fill quickly on match days.
The green exterior reflects the club colours and consists of specially made panels that shift tone depending on the light. The museum inside holds not only trophies but also personal items from former players, including the first shirt worn by a world-famous striker.
