Forte da Ameixoeira

Forte da Ameixoeira is a military installation situated on a hill with fortified walls, storage chambers, and multiple buildings that functioned as an integrated defensive system. The complex includes various functional spaces designed for administration and the capital's protection.

The fort was constructed between 1875 and 1901 as part of a broader defensive line surrounding Lisbon. It served as the city's final protective position against potential external threats.

The name reflects a local feature from the period of its construction, while the complex demonstrates the technical expertise of military engineers from the late 1800s. The stone walls and spatial layout reveal how such defensive structures were designed during that era.

The site is not open to visitors, as it serves an administrative function today. The outer walls and structure can be viewed from the surrounding area.

A blast in 1943 caused major damage to the installation, prompting a complete reconstruction a decade later. The modernization that followed in the 1950s fundamentally altered the internal layout.
