Forte de Santa Luzia, Military fort in Elvas, Portugal
The Santa Luzia Fort features four pentagonal bastions surrounding a central quadrangular redoubt with a governor's house and a bomb-proof vaulted structure.
Construction of the fort began in 1641 under Matias de Albuquerque's design and completed in 1648, later modified by Sebastião Frias during the Portuguese Restoration War.
The fort exemplifies Renaissance military architecture with Vauban-style fortification principles, forming part of the Elvas Border Garrison designated as UNESCO World Heritage.
Visitors can explore the fort Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 in summer and 10:00 to 17:00 in winter, with general admission at 3 euros.
The fort contains two cisterns capable of supplying water to four hundred soldiers for three months, demonstrating advanced military infrastructure from the 17th century.
