Fortress of Saint James of Sesimbra

Forte de Santiago is a fortress positioned on a strategic hilltop between two beaches, with views toward the Atlantic Ocean and Sesimbra harbor. The site features restored defensive walls and a museum that documents the maritime history of the area.

The fortress was built between 1495 and 1521 to protect the Portuguese coast from sea raiders during the Age of Discoveries. It played an important role in monitoring the harbor and maritime traffic for centuries afterward.

The fortress houses the Sesimbra Maritime Museum, which shows the town's deep connection to the sea through local fishing traditions. Visitors can see historical fishing tools and objects that shaped the life of the community over generations.
