Forte de São Brás de Sanxete, Coastal fort in Cabo Raso, Cascais, Portugal
Forte de São Brás de Sanxete is a coastal fort on Cabo Raso built directly on a rocky promontory overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The structure features substantial stone walls and bastions arranged compactly to fit the rocky terrain while providing panoramic views of the coastline.
The fort was built in 1658 under King João IV as a coastal defense structure against maritime threats. Over time it lost its military purpose and was eventually repurposed to support seafaring navigation.
The fort represents Portuguese maritime defense architecture, incorporating traditional military engineering principles with local construction techniques of the 17th century.
The site is easily reached from the coastal path and is best visited during daylight to appreciate the views and structural details. The terrain is sometimes uneven and exposed to wind, so proper footwear and clothing are important.
A red iron lighthouse was added in 1915, marking the shift from a military installation to a modern navigation aid center. This tower remains visible from the sea and continues to guide vessels today.
