Museum of the Sea, Cascais

Museum of the Sea, Cascais, maritime and fishing museum in Portugal

The Museum of the Sea, Cascais is located in a former sports club building that now contains several rooms with maritime displays. The collections feature boat models, old fishing tools, shells, fossils, and shipwreck items that document the region's connection to the sea over time.

The building was originally the residence and workplace of King Carlos I, who had a strong interest in ocean science and supported maritime research. After his era, the building became a sports club and was converted into a museum in 1992 to preserve Cascais' maritime heritage.

The museum's name reflects the deep relationship between Cascais and the ocean that remains visible in how locals live. Walking through the exhibits, you see everyday objects from fishermen and sailors that show how deeply the sea shaped the community's way of life.

The museum is located in the center of Cascais near the train station and is easily reached on foot or by public transport such as bus or the free biCAS bike-sharing system. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, so plan your visit for these days and avoid Mondays.

The museum awards an annual prize in honor of King Carlos I to scientists who achieve outstanding work in ocean research. This tradition shows how the king's scientific passion continues to shape the institution and support local research today.
