Forte de Nossa Senhora da Luz de Cascais, Military fort in Cascais, Portugal
The fortress sits on solid rock with three bastions designed to defend the river entrance. Its layout combines military architecture with stone defensive walls and offers views across the water and coastline.
It was built in 1594 on the site of a 15th-century tower. The 1755 earthquake caused serious damage and destroyed much of its upper structure.
The chapel inside is dedicated to Santo António and once served as a place of worship for soldiers stationed here. It shows how religious faith was woven into the daily lives of those who guarded this coastal stronghold.
The site opens to visitors during set hours, allowing you to explore the defensive structures and military layout. Guided visits are available if you want to learn more about its design and past military use.
The fort functions as the official summer residence of Portugal's president while also serving as an active military installation. Few visitors realize that this historical site has this contemporary dual purpose.
