The Baroque structure displays blue and white ceramic tiles across its exterior walls, featuring detailed religious scenes and geometric patterns throughout the facade.
Completed in 1768, the church became central to Porto's religious life during the French invasion period between 1808 and 1814 when military forces occupied it.
The church maintains traditional Catholic ceremonies and houses valuable religious artifacts, including gilded wooden altars and detailed religious artwork from the 18th century.
Located near Santa Catarina Street and Clerigos Tower, the church welcomes visitors daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM for both worship and tourism.
A narrow house separates Igreja do Carmo from Igreja dos Carmelitas, built specifically to prevent interaction between monks and nuns of adjacent religious orders.
