Palace Vidago Hotel, building in Chaves Municipality, Vila Real District, Portugal
Palace Vidago Hotel is a five-star property near the thermal baths of Vidago in northern Portugal. Built in 1910 and fully renovated, it features 70 double rooms and nine large suites decorated with period furniture, some showcasing hand-painted wallpaper and antique pieces.
The hotel was designed by architect José Ferreira da Costa and opened by King Manuel II in 1910, at a time when Vidago's thermal baths had already received international awards for their mineral waters. After major renovation from 1995 to 2008 under architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, it reopened in 2010 exactly 100 years later, marked by a visit from Prime Minister José Sócrates.
The hotel takes its name from the village of Vidago and its mineral springs, which have been valued for their healing properties across generations. Visitors can sense today how this place centers on relaxation and wellness, reflected in the quiet way guests use the grounds and visit the thermal baths.
The hotel sits within a large park with walking trails and includes an 18-hole golf course, fitness center, outdoor pool, and thermal spa accessible from your room. Parking is complimentary, pets are welcome, and staff speak multiple languages to assist your stay.
The grounds were originally laid out with an ice-skating rink on a park island, and the careful Belle-Époque-era landscaping remains visible in the paths, groves, and three separate mineral springs on the property. A television film shot here in 2011 showcased the building's beauty during the 1930s and introduced it to Portuguese popular culture.
