Museu de Arte Contemporânea Nadir Afonso, Municipal art museum in Chaves, Portugal
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea Nadir Afonso is an art museum located in Chaves along the Tâmega River and was designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The building contains four exhibition halls, a library, an auditorium seating around one hundred people, and a bar.
The museum opened in 2016 and was founded on artworks that painter Nadir Afonso donated to Chaves Municipality in 1982. These pieces had previously been held at the Museu da Região Flaviense.
The museum is named after the artist Nadir Afonso, who was born in Chaves, and centers on Portuguese contemporary creativity. It shows work by painters and sculptors from different periods, rotating pieces to keep the displays fresh.
Guided tours are available to help visitors understand the permanent and temporary exhibitions on display. The location offers comfortable facilities and is accessible for those wanting to explore contemporary art collections.
Through a partnership with Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea, the museum acquired important works including João Cutileiro's sculpture Daphne. This collaboration allows the institution to grow its collection beyond local artists.
