Castle of Santo Estêvão, Medieval castle in Santo Estêvão, Portugal

The rectangular keep tower stands with thick granite walls near the Tamega River, close to the Spanish border in Vila Real District.

Construction of the fortification began during King Afonso I's reign in the 12th century and expanded under King Sancho I's rule.

The castle transformed from a military stronghold into a rectory after the 16th century, marking changes in Portuguese defensive requirements.

The castle received substantial restoration work between 1940 and 1946, including reconstruction of the tower and repairs to damaged masonry.

The structure hosted the wedding ceremony between Infanta Theresa and Alfonso IX of León during its period of strategic importance.
