Forte de São Neutel is a military fortification in the historic center of Chaves featuring a rectangular plan with four bastions positioned at each corner. The fort was constructed between 1664 and 1668 during the Portuguese Restoration War under General Andrade e Sousa as a defensive measure for the northern frontier. Its establishment reflected strategic military planning during a critical period of territorial consolidation in the region.
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Brotas stands within the fortress walls, built before the fort itself and reflecting its spiritual importance. Visitors can witness traditional processions here during Easter season, showing how the space bridges military function with religious practice.
