Forte de São Neutel

Forte de São Neutel is a military fortification in the historic center of Chaves featuring a rectangular plan with four bastions positioned at each corner. The structure comprises solid stone walls, a dry moat surrounding the perimeter, and internal spaces that demonstrate typical defensive architecture of its period.

The fort was constructed between 1664 and 1668 during the Portuguese Restoration War under General Andrade e Sousa as a defensive measure for the northern frontier. Its establishment reflected strategic military planning during a critical period of territorial consolidation in the region.

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Brotas stands within the fortress walls, built before the fort itself and reflecting its spiritual importance. Visitors can witness traditional processions here during Easter season, showing how the space bridges military function with religious practice.

Access to the fort is arranged through scheduled visits coordinated by the municipality of Chaves and the Portuguese Army. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the paths within the stone structures can be uneven and require careful navigation.

In 1994 the city of Chaves constructed an amphitheater within the fort's interior courtyard, transforming the military structure into a venue for outdoor performances. This adaptation demonstrates how the historical fortification now serves the community as a cultural gathering space.
