Forte de São Neutel, Military fort in Santa Maria Maior, Chaves, Portugal
The fort presents a quadrangular layout with four bastions at its corners, surrounded by a dry moat and robust stone walls reaching ten meters.
Construction of the fort began between 1664 and 1668 during the Portuguese Restoration War under General Andrade e Sousa to protect the northern border.
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Brotas, built before the fort itself, remains an integral part with annual processions during Easter celebrations.
The Portuguese Army and Chaves Municipality maintain an agreement allowing scheduled visits to explore the fortification and its architectural elements.
In 1994, the municipality constructed an amphitheater inside the fort walls, transforming the military structure into a venue for outdoor concerts.
