Praia de Monte Gordo, Atlantic beach in Monte Gordo, Portugal
Praia de Monte Gordo is an Atlantic beach on the eastern Algarve coast in Portugal, bordered by a wooden boardwalk that runs along the shoreline. The sand is fine and pale, and the seabed slopes gently, keeping the water shallow for a good distance from the shore.
Monte Gordo was once a small fishing village that gradually became a resort town through the second half of the 20th century, when hotels and apartment buildings began to replace older structures. The fishing trade was never entirely abandoned and still leaves a visible mark on the beach today.
Local fishermen still work in a dedicated section of the beach, where traditional wooden boats and nets left to dry in the sun are easy to spot. This scene is part of everyday life here and can be seen from the boardwalk.
Bars and restaurants line the beachfront, and equipment rentals for water activities are available along the shore. Parking is located just behind the beach, so reaching the water and the facilities does not require a long walk.
The water at Monte Gordo tends to be warmer than at most other beaches along the Algarve coast, because the mouth of the Guadiana River nearby affects the sea temperature. This means swimming here can be comfortable even in spring or early autumn.
