Quinta da Conceição

The property originated as a Franciscan monastery dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição in 1481 before transitioning to public grounds in the 20th century. This conversion preserved the original architectural features while making the site accessible to the broader community.

The site holds architectural pieces from different eras, including a Manueline gateway, granite water features, and a chapel housing the remains of Friar João da Póvoa. These elements tell visitors about the religious purpose the place once served and how it evolved over centuries.

The park is located between Vila Franca Street and Antunes Guimarães Avenue with free entry to most areas except the tennis courts and swimming pool. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since different sections sit at varying elevation levels throughout the property.

The swimming pool was designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira in 1965 and represents an early example of Portuguese modernist architecture. This structure demonstrates how historic sites can be reinvigorated through thoughtful contemporary design additions.
