Cambarinho Botanical Reserve, Natura 2000 protected area in Vouzela, Portugal

Cambarinho Botanical Reserve sits on the northern slope of Caramulo Mountain, displaying granite soils and numerous rock outcrops throughout its terrain. The site holds populations of rhododendrons and other plant species that have adapted to the steep hillsides and acidic soil conditions.

The reserve received official protection status in 1971 to safeguard Rhododendron ponticum populations, a species that survived from an earlier period in European history. This action recognized that the area held botanical significance and needed special attention for its preservation.

The reserve holds importance for local people as one of the few places where you can see large concentrations of oleander plants in their natural setting. These plants shape the landscape and show how deeply the region connects with its natural surroundings.

A simple loop walking path extends about 1.4 kilometers along the Cambarinho stream with clear signage throughout. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the terrain is hilly and rocky in places.

The reserve holds rare specimens of Rhododendron ponticum, a plant from a distant geological past. This species shows how European vegetation has shifted dramatically since the Tertiary period millions of years ago.
