Ruins of Tróia, Archaeological site in Carvalhal, Portugal.

The excavated ruins contain twenty fish salting factories, residential buildings, and public baths spread across the Sado River peninsula.

From the first to sixth centuries, this Roman settlement functioned as a major fish processing center, exporting preserved products throughout the Empire.

The archaeological complex includes a preserved early Christian basilica decorated with frescoes, indicating religious practices of the Roman community.

The site opens Wednesday through Saturday from April to October, with guided tours available during July and August months.

Archaeological teams recently recreated traditional Roman garum fish sauce production methods at the original location after 1500 years.
