Torre de Vasconcelos

Torre de Vasconcelos is a medieval fortified tower in Ferreiros, Prozelo and Besteiros, built on elevated ground overlooking the Barrio stream with a rectangular floor plan. The structure features an original entrance and rectangular annexes that combine residential spaces with defensive elements.

The tower was built in the mid-13th century by brothers Pero Anes de Vasconcelos and Rodrigo Anes de Vasconcelos as their noble estate. The structure later gained attention when the Portuguese poet Sá de Miranda became associated with it in the 16th century.

The tower served as home to Portuguese poet Sá de Miranda during the 16th century, linking literary history to medieval architecture. This connection to literature adds significance to the site beyond its role as a defensive structure.

The site sits on elevated terrain with views of the surroundings and holds protection as a monument of public interest. Visitors should expect hillside conditions and a location outside larger towns, making it best accessed during daylight hours.

The tower follows a domus fortis design that merges residential quarters with defensive features through rectangular annexes and an ogival arch doorway. This approach represents an early example of combining comfort with protection in medieval noble architecture.
