Igreja de São Bernardo, compreendendo o túmulo de D. Jorge de Mello

Convento de São Bernardo is a monastery building in Sé e São Lourenço with three church naves, two cloisters featuring central fountains, and elaborate marble work throughout. The structure combines religious function with artistic decoration across its different areas.

The convent was founded in 1518 by Bishop Jorge de Melo to house young women without dowries who would dedicate themselves to religious life. This establishment addressed both social needs and religious goals of that time.

The interior corridors display painted tile panels from the 18th century that show scenes from Saint Bernard's life and religious stories. These artworks tell quiet stories on the walls as you walk through the spaces.

The building now serves as a training center for the Portuguese National Guard, with limited public access to certain historical areas. Visitors should check in advance which sections are open and what visiting times apply.

The marble burial chapel of founder Jorge de Melo is remarkably large and ranks among the most impressive religious monuments in the country. Its size surprises many visitors who had not expected such importance placed on the founder.
