João de Bettencourt de Vasconcelos, Commander of Angra, built this manor house in the middle of the 17th century by incorporating an existing smaller structure. Following major restoration work, it now serves as the official residence of the Republic's Representative in the Azores.
The chapel inside honors Nossa Senhora da Madre de Deus and was formally established in 1727 with the bishop's approval. It reflects the deep religious devotion that shaped the household's daily life.
