Solar da Madre de Deus

Solar da Madre de Deus is a manor house in the Alto das Covas district that blends urban residential features with a large rural estate property. The compound includes courtyards, a fountain, and stone-paved areas that show the full extent of the original property layout.

João de Bettencourt de Vasconcelos, Commander of Angra, built this manor house in the middle of the 17th century by incorporating an existing smaller structure. Following major restoration work, it now serves as the official residence of the Republic's Representative in the Azores.

The chapel inside honors Nossa Senhora da Madre de Deus and was formally established in 1727 with the bishop's approval. It reflects the deep religious devotion that shaped the household's daily life.

The house is located in downtown Angra do Heroísmo and is visible from public spaces. Since it serves as an official residence, only the exterior areas and surroundings can be viewed from outside, but the gate and facade clearly display the building's architectural details.

The entrance gate and stone-paved courtyard areas feature carved dates marking when different owners made changes to the property. These inscriptions in the stone tell the stories of successive owners who left their marks on the manor.
