Convent of São Francisco

The Convent of São Francisco is a baroque complex in Nossa Senhora da Conceição on Terceira Island, featuring the Church of Our Lady of the Guide at its core. The structure displays high walls and multiple arches arranged in a rectangular layout.

Franciscan friars began constructing the site in 1456, establishing a spiritual center on the island. Following severe destruction, it underwent major reconstruction between 1666 and 1672.

The convent houses a museum displaying religious objects and artworks that reflect life in the Azores. These pieces show how faith shaped daily routines and community practices across the islands.

The site and its museum are accessible to visitors, with guided tours available for groups. It helps to plan ahead if you are interested in a tour conducted in a specific language.

An organ from the 18th century survived the 1980 earthquake and remains in working condition. It stands as one of the few original musical instruments preserved from that period.
