Forte de São Sebastião, 16th-century coastal fort in Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal
The fortress stands on a hill at the eastern edge of Angra Bay, featuring stone walls that oversee the port of Pipas and the Atlantic Ocean.
Constructed in 1580 under King D. Sebastião's order, the fort established a new approach to maritime defense through its strategic position above the harbor.
The structure represents Portuguese military engineering principles, incorporating Italian architectural elements designed by Tomaz Benedito de Pesaro and Isidoro de Almeida.
The fort operates daily from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM and houses a hotel within the Pousadas de Portugal network.
The fort coordinated defenses with São João Baptista Fortress through crossfire capabilities, creating an integrated protection system for Angra Bay.
