Conjunto megalítico do Olival da Pêga, Neolithic burial complex near Monsaraz, Portugal
Conjunto megalítico do Olival da Pêga is a prehistoric burial site with two stone chamber tombs from the Neolithic period. The complex features chambers built from upright stones and long corridors lined with flat stone slabs.
The site was investigated by German archaeologists in the 1960s and later studied by researchers from the University of Lisbon. These investigations established the foundational understanding of these prehistoric burial tombs in the region.
The site includes two large shale orthostates in the corridor with cup-like engravings, plus ceramic vessels, bone hairpins, and zoomorphic figurines.
The site is part of a local archaeological route and requires caution near excavated areas. Visitors should be aware that this is an active research area and the terrain can be uneven.
Excavations revealed over one hundred human remains in each chamber, along with various stone and bone objects. Among the finds was a copper dagger, indicating early metalworking practices.
