D. António Francisco dos Santos Bridge, Transportation bridge over River Douro in Metropolitan Area of Porto, Portugal.
The D. António Francisco dos Santos Bridge is a new transportation bridge crossing the River Douro, connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. It spans 625 meters with its deck positioned about 300 meters above water.
Planning for this seventh bridge across the Douro began in 2018 through an agreement between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia municipalities. The project was developed to improve transportation connections between the two riverbanks.
The bridge bears the name of António Francisco dos Santos, who held the position of bishop of Porto and made substantial contributions to the region.
This bridge will significantly improve traffic flow between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, providing an alternative route to existing crossings. Visitors should note that access and conditions may change as the project progresses.
The structure must meet a critical height requirement, as its deck must sit above the low-water level of the nearby Dom Luis Bridge. This constraint shaped the design and created a notable engineering challenge with innovative solutions.
