Núcleo de seis menires, na Herdade dos Perdigões, cultural heritage monument in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal
The Nucleo de seis menires at Herdade dos Perdigoes is a group of six upright stones on a flat landscape near Reguengos de Monsaraz. The complex spans a large area and contains, alongside the menhirs, underground burials, ditches of various shapes, and a circular wooden structure approximately 20 meters in diameter.
The site was founded around 2800 to 2600 BC and remained an important ritual center for regional communities for more than a thousand years. It was later abandoned as society changed, but left lasting traces of its ancient activities.
The six standing stones mark a place where ancient communities gathered for ceremonies and rituals. The arrangement of the stones and the objects discovered here reveal how this location served as a focal point for collective practices and spiritual activities.
The site is open and exposed, so sun protection is advisable on hot days and water should be brought along. There are no modern facilities, but signage and information panels help visitors understand the ancient structures.
A distinctive feature is a circular wooden structure similar to English Woodhenge, measuring about 20 meters in diameter, likely used for observing the sun and stars. In 2015, burned human skulls were discovered, suggesting special burial rites and deepening understanding of the ritual practices at this location.
