Kayangel, Remote atoll state in northern Palau.
Kayangel is an atoll in northern Palau made up of four small islands with white sand beaches. The largest island spans approximately 98 hectares and contains several settlements along its western shore.
The atoll was reached by Spanish colonizers at the end of the 16th century and later came under German, Japanese, and American control. It experienced multiple changes in authority before Palau achieved independence.
The state maintains traditional governance under a high chief titled Rdechor, while preserving local fishing practices and agricultural methods passed through generations.
Boats from Koror provide access to the island, with the journey taking several hours. Basic accommodation is available, but visitors should expect limited services and a small community.
The reefs surrounding the atoll display diverse coral formations with shallow lagoons and deeper channels. This underwater landscape offers a rare glimpse into how reef structures are still developing in this region.
