Central Cemetery

Central Cemetery is a burial ground in Cluj-Napoca containing 33,000 graves spread across a large area. The tombstones display various architectural styles ranging from eclectic designs to Art Nouveau elements that reflect the city's history.

The cemetery was established in 1585 following a plague outbreak and later moved outside city limits as the original burial ground became too small. This relocation allowed Cluj-Napoca's growing population to continue burying their dead.

The cemetery holds graves from Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Reformed, Unitarian, and Jewish communities who lived in Cluj-Napoca. The different tombstones reflect the religious traditions and beliefs that shaped the lives of these people.

The grounds are well maintained and continue to be used for burials and memorial services. Visitors should take time to explore the various grave styles and consider using the city's guided tour options if available.

The Bethlen family tomb-chapel is the only neo-Roman style funerary monument in Cluj County and stands out for its unusual architecture. This rare burial site offers an intriguing look at a distinctive burial tradition from the past.
