Cluj-Napoca Tailors' Bastion, Medieval defensive structure in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
The Tailors' Bastion sits at the southeast corner of Cluj-Napoca's former citadel and is a stone defensive tower with crenels and gun ports. Its thick walls and defensive openings display the medieval construction methods used in this fortification.
The tower was built in the 15th century under King Sigismund of Luxemburg and is the sole survivor of eighteen original fortification towers. The citadel served as the city's main defensive system across several centuries.
The Centre for Urban Culture inside hosts exhibition spaces across three floors that explore architectural history and how the city developed. You can see through displays how the fortifications and surrounding area evolved together over centuries.
You can explore the inside of the tower across several levels, though the stairs and corridors are somewhat narrow in places. After restoration work in 2007, the structure is stable, but wear sturdy shoes and watch your footing.
General Baba Novac was executed here in 1601, and his statue now stands beside the tower as a memorial. This execution took place amid the military conflicts that affected the city in the early 17th century.
