Cluj-Napoca National Theatre, Opera house and national theatre in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
The Cluj-Napoca National Theatre is an opera house and theatre in the heart of the city, built in Art Nouveau style with Neo-Baroque elements. The main hall seats around 900 people and is used for opera, spoken theatre, and ballet.
The building was completed in 1906 by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer and originally served as a Hungarian institution. After World War I, in 1919, it became a Romanian national theatre and has kept that role ever since.
The theatre hosts performances in Romanian and is one of the few major stages in the region where Romanian-language drama, opera, and ballet are regularly presented. Audiences from across the city and the surrounding area come here as part of the everyday cultural life of Cluj-Napoca.
The theatre is in the city center and can be reached on foot from most of the main squares and streets nearby. The programme changes with the season, so checking what is on before your visit is a good idea.
During World War II, the Romanian opera company was moved to Timișoara, where it performed for several years before returning to this building. The same Viennese architects who designed this theatre also built many other theatres across Central Europe, giving the building a design found in several cities of the region.
