Capitoline Wolf Statue, Bronze monument in Eroilor Boulevard, Cluj-Napoca, Romania
The Capitoline Wolf statue shows a bronze she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus on a granite pedestal in the city center of Cluj-Napoca. This artwork stands about 0.75 meters tall at the intersection of Eroilor Boulevard and University Square.
Italy presented this statue to Cluj in 1921 to mark the union of Transylvania with Romania. It was stored and later reinstalled after World War II to protect it from political upheaval.
The inscriptions on the monument link Cluj to Rome and reflect how the city sees itself as part of Latin heritage. Visitors notice these connections when walking around the base.
The monument sits at a busy intersection and is easy to reach on foot from nearby streets. You can walk around it freely and view the inscriptions from different angles.
The statue was removed and carefully stored in 1940 to protect it from damage during political turmoil. This action preserved the artwork through a difficult time in the city's history.
