John Sigismund Unitarian Academy, Historical Unitarian high school in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
The John Sigismund Unitarian Academy is a school housed in a large building that stands next to the Unitarian Church on Boulevard 21 December 1989. The structure was designed by architect Lajos Pakey in 1901 and remains one of the largest school buildings in the city.
The academy was founded in 1557 by the Unitarian Diocese of Transylvania and moved to several locations before settling where it stands today. During the communist period from 1948 to 1993 the institution was shut down and only resumed operations later.
The school preserves the traditions of Unitarian education and shows how this community passed its values to young people. The building itself reflects the importance of this movement in Transylvania.
The building sits at a central location and operates as a high school serving students interested in Unitarian education. Visitors should know that it is an active school with protected heritage status, so access to some areas may be restricted.
The building received its current name in 2003, decades after operations resumed following the long closure. This renaming honored an important figure in Unitarian history and marked a new chapter for the institution.
