Jósika Castle is a one-story fortified residence in Surduc featuring straightforward design with two bastions on the main facades. A round bastion tower once formed the main entrance and defines the building's overall appearance.
The castle began as a noble residence and suffered damage during the 1848 unrest. Its restoration took place in the later 1800s, giving it the form it has today.
Writer Miklós Jósika lived here from 1834 to 1853 and wrote his famous historical novel 'Abafi' during his stay. His presence connects this place to the growth of Hungarian literature in the 19th century.
The site sits on the left bank of the Someș River and reaches visitors through local road networks. Expect limited access since the building currently serves as a storage facility for private companies.
Parts of the structure were built using stones taken from the ancient Roman fort of Tihău, giving it layers of earlier history. The original estate once featured a park with fountains and a monument to Maria Theresa.
