Haller mansion in Gârbou, Sălaj, heritage site in Sălaj County, Romania
The Haller mansion in Gârbou is a baroque estate built in 1776 on the remains of a Roman fort. The original complex included a main house, a stone church built around 1783, a French fountain, and defensive walls, but today only the chapel, gate, and fountain remain in deteriorated condition.
János Haller built the estate in 1776 and the family added a stone church around 1783 in baroque style. An armed conflict with neighbor Baron Miklós Wesselényi around 1781, sparked by personal rivalry, caused significant damage to the complex from which it never fully recovered.
Locals call this place "Burgul," which means the fort or mansion. The estate was a center of power and influence for the Haller family in the region during the 1700s.
The site is hard to spot and requires careful searching to locate the ruins. Be cautious when visiting as the remaining structures are unstable and unsafe to enter.
An inscription on the gate reads 1844, indicating that major parts of the estate were renovated long after the original construction. The fact that the gateway outlasted the main buildings shows the durability of its baroque design.
