Iron Gates Natural Park, Natural park in southwestern Romania
Iron Gates Natural Park spreads along the Danube River, forming a natural border between Romania and Serbia. The area contains several protected zones with different ecosystems and wildlife habitats.
The area was officially protected in 2000 and incorporates several separate reserves. Designation as a Ramsar site recognized the importance of these wetlands for migratory birds and other species.
The communities living here speak different languages and maintain their own traditions. People from various backgrounds—Serbs, Hungarians, Roma, and others—share the same landscape and use it in their daily lives.
Visitors can explore marked hiking trails and join guided tours, but need permission from park administration beforehand. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit when migratory birds pass through the area.
Europe's longest gorge runs through this area with towering limestone cliffs lining the river. This massive landform was carved over millions of years by the river's constant flow.
